Water mist fire sprinkler installation for UK projects

NPHS designs, installs, commissions and maintains water mist fire suppression systems across the UK. Our work covers project review, system design, water supply, installation coordination, commissioning and handover documentation.

Water mist can provide highly effective fire suppression using dramatically less water than conventional sprinkler arrangements. Lower water demand can reduce plant requirements, pipe sizes and the volume of water discharged during an activation.

Compact equipment and discreet nozzles also make water mist well suited to retrofit projects, constrained plant areas, heritage buildings and high-finish interiors.

NPHS can become involved during specification or once drawings, a fire strategy or tender package are available. Specialist systems including Cease Fire, gaseous suppression and Ultra Fog can also be considered where the project risk calls for a different approach.

Installation process

What is included in water mist fire sprinkler installation?

Water mist installation can include design coordination, compact pump equipment, pipework, water mist nozzles, valves, controls, water supply arrangements, testing, commissioning and handover documentation.

The final scope depends on the building, application, fire strategy, selected technology and agreed project responsibilities.

  1. Review project drawings, specification, building use and fire strategy
  2. Confirm the suitable water mist or specialist suppression route
  3. Review water supply, plant requirements, test evidence and installation constraints
  4. Coordinate pipework, nozzles, pump equipment, controls and interfaces
  5. Install the agreed system around the site programme
  6. Test the installed system and complete commissioning checks
  7. Provide relevant handover and system information
  8. Plan inspection and maintenance after completion

Early coordination gives the project team more options for nozzle positions, pipe routes, pump location and future service access. Smaller water mist pipework and compact plant can make coordination easier in buildings where space is limited.

Choosing the system

Which fire suppression system is suitable?

NPHS starts with the building, fire risk, water supply, available space, test evidence and project approval route. Water mist is our primary installation specialism, with other specialist systems considered where the application requires them.

Water mist

Fine droplets provide effective fire suppression with substantially lower water demand. Compact equipment, smaller pipework and discreet nozzles can make mist particularly practical for retrofit, constrained spaces and finished interiors.

High-pressure and low-pressure mist

Different water mist technologies suit different applications. Selection depends on tested performance, hazard, building type, available water supply, space and the required system configuration.

Specialist suppression

Kitchens, equipment risks, technical rooms, machinery and other defined hazards may suit Cease Fire, gaseous suppression, Ultra Fog or another project-specific specialist system.

Standards & compliance

Water mist standards and compliance routes

Water mist systems need to be selected and designed around the relevant standard, application test evidence, fire strategy and project approval route.

BS EN 14972-1:2020+A1:2025 provides the current framework for the design, installation, inspection and maintenance of fixed land-based water mist systems.

BS EN 14972-17:2025 provides the residential occupancy fire-test protocol for automatic nozzle water mist systems. The selected product should have evidence that supports its intended application and configuration.

BS 8458:2015 was withdrawn by BSI on 7 July 2025. Withdrawal does not automatically invalidate products previously independently tested and certified against it. Existing certification can remain relevant supporting evidence when reviewed alongside current standards and the project requirements.

Approved Document B, the fire strategy, Building Control requirements and other project-specific conditions may also influence the compliance route. NPHS can provide technical information and system evidence to support that process.

Project applications

Commercial, residential and specialist water mist installation

Water mist can be used across a wide range of buildings where suitable test evidence supports the application. Reduced water demand, compact equipment and smaller pipework can solve practical installation problems in both new-build and retrofit projects.

01

Commercial water mist installation

Offices, hotels, public buildings and other commercial properties can benefit from reduced water demand, compact plant and installation routes designed around existing services.

02

Residential developments

Flats, apartments, care, supported living and housing schemes can use discreet water mist systems designed around occupancy, fire strategy, test evidence and long-term management.

03

Domestic properties

Individual homes, open-plan layouts, extensions and loft conversions can benefit from compact pumps, discreet ceiling nozzles and reduced water demand where the system suits the project.

04

Retrofit and heritage projects

Smaller pipework, compact equipment and lower water demand can make water mist practical where plant space, ceiling voids, finishes or existing building fabric create installation constraints.

05

Specialist risks

Technical rooms, kitchens, plant, equipment and localised hazards may require water mist, gaseous suppression, Cease Fire, Ultra Fog or another specialist solution.

Domestic and residential projects are treated separately within the NPHS specification route. Building type, occupancy, fire strategy and test evidence determine the design approach.

Project close-out

Commissioning, handover and water mist system documentation

Commissioning confirms that the installed water mist system has been checked against the design before handover. It also provides a clear record for the contractor, consultant, client and future building management team.

Depending on the system and project scope, handover information may include:

  1. Final system drawings and installation information
  2. Nozzle, pump, valve and equipment data
  3. Water supply and operating information
  4. Testing and commissioning records
  5. Control and alarm interface information where relevant
  6. Operating and maintenance information
  7. Inspection and servicing requirements
  8. Defect or remedial information where required

Clear records make future inspection, maintenance, alterations and fault investigation easier. They also help preserve the design and test basis of the system when the building changes.

After installation

Fire sprinkler and water mist maintenance after installation

Water mist fire suppression systems need planned inspection and servicing after handover.

NPHS maintains the water mist systems we install and can also inspect, service and manage suitable existing traditional sprinkler systems.

Planned maintenance helps building managers maintain records, identify defects and check whether alterations to the building have affected coverage, equipment or system access.
