Ultra Fog Commercial Water Mist Systems

NPHS supplies, designs, installs, commissions and maintains Ultra Fog high-pressure water mist systems for suitable commercial, industrial and specialist applications across the UK.

Ultra Fog technology combines fine water droplets, compact pipework and application-specific system design to provide effective fire suppression while controlling water demand and reducing the space required for some conventional sprinkler arrangements.

Why choose an Ultra Fog water mist system?

Ultra Fog specialises in high-pressure water mist technology for land, marine, offshore and transport applications. NPHS uses the technology for suitable commercial and specialist fire suppression projects in the UK.

The existing NPHS commercial page highlights the practical reasons project teams consider water mist: reduced water demand, smaller distribution pipework, compact equipment and the ability to protect buildings where water damage and space are important considerations. Ultra Fog high-pressure pumps force water through purpose-designed stainless-steel nozzles, creating large numbers of fine droplets. The complete system can include pumps, nozzles, valves, electrical controls, accumulators and other components selected around the protected application. NPHS can review the project before the technology has been selected, or take forward an Ultra Fog solution already specified by a consultant or fire strategy. How it works

The science behind Ultra Fog water mist fire suppression

Water mist suppresses fire primarily through rapid heat absorption, local interaction with oxygen around the fire and reduction of radiant heat transfer.

Ultra Fog states that its systems typically produce droplets in the region of 30 to 200 microns. The large combined surface area of those droplets allows them to absorb heat efficiently. As water evaporates, it expands into steam and can reduce the oxygen concentration locally around the flame. The suspended mist can also reduce radiant heat transfer to nearby combustible materials. Compared with conventional sprinkler arrangements, suitable high-pressure water mist systems can achieve the required suppression objective using considerably less water. The exact performance depends on the proprietary system, fire-test evidence, nozzle arrangement, operating pressure, protected hazard and hydraulic design. View Ultra Fog water mist technology →

Where can Ultra Fog water mist be used?

Ultra Fog technology has been developed across a wide range of land, marine, offshore and transport applications. For UK building projects, suitability depends on the specific hazard and available system evidence.

Commercial buildings

Suitable applications can include offices, hotels, hospitality venues, public buildings, healthcare facilities and other commercial premises where water demand and plant space matter. Commercial suppression systems →

A space-conscious commercial fire suppression option

One of the strongest messages from the existing NPHS commercial page is the practical value of reduced water demand. Ultra Fog publishes substantially lower water consumption figures for suitable high-pressure applications compared with many conventional sprinkler and low-pressure mist arrangements. That can reduce the associated water storage requirement and allow smaller distribution pipework in some projects. These characteristics can be useful where plant space, riser sizes, structural constraints or retrofit routes make conventional arrangements difficult. Actual water demand, tank capacity and pipe sizes should always be established from the tested system and hydraulic design rather than assumed from technology type alone. Long-term inspection and servicing

Ultra Fog nozzle testing and maintenance

A commercial water mist system needs planned inspection and maintenance throughout its service life.

The original NPHS page highlights Ultra Fog’s nozzle test tool as an important maintenance feature. Ultra Fog developed the tool so that applicable nozzles can be function-tested and flushed without removing the nozzle or breaking the temperature-sensitive glass bulb. That allows maintainers to check nozzle operation, flush pipe ends and identify issues that could affect future system performance. NPHS can provide planned inspection and maintenance for suitable commercial water mist systems, including systems installed by another contractor where the necessary system information is available. Standards, testing and project evidence

What standards apply to commercial water mist systems?

BS 8489-1:2016 remains a current British Standard providing recommendations for the design and installation of industrial and commercial water mist systems. The wider standards position is application-specific. BS EN 14972-1:2020+A1:2025 also provides the current general European framework for fixed land-based water mist systems, supported by application-specific fire-test protocols within the EN 14972 series. The relevant route therefore depends on the protected hazard, system certification, accepted fire-test evidence and project requirements. NPHS can help review the applicable system evidence during specification and design.

Ultra Fog water mist FAQs

What is an Ultra Fog water mist system?

Ultra Fog is a proprietary high-pressure water mist fire suppression system. High-pressure pumps deliver water through specialist nozzles that generate fine droplets designed to absorb heat efficiently and suppress fire using controlled volumes of water.

Where can Ultra Fog systems be used?

Ultra Fog develops systems for land, marine, offshore and transport applications. In UK commercial projects, suitability depends on the building or hazard, relevant fire-test evidence, system certification, design requirements and project fire strategy.

Does commercial water mist use less water than sprinklers?

Suitable high-pressure water mist systems can use substantially less water than many conventional sprinkler arrangements. Exact demand depends on the protected hazard, nozzle characteristics, system design and fire-test parameters.

What standard applies to commercial water mist?

BS 8489-1:2016 remains a current UK code of practice for industrial and commercial water mist system design and installation. BS EN 14972-1:2020+A1:2025 also provides a general framework for fixed water mist systems, supported by application-specific testing within the EN 14972 series.

Can NPHS maintain an existing Ultra Fog system?

NPHS can inspect and maintain suitable commercial water mist systems, including existing installations where the necessary system documentation, components and maintenance requirements can be established.
